Firmware release notes
HP StoreEver MSL Tape Libraries offer various interface options for maximum flexibility when installing the tape library into a SAS or fibre channel SAN environment.

The Autoloader or Library firmware can be updated through any of the following methods: • Remote management interface (RMI). • Operator control panel (OCP) using a USB flash drive. • HP Library and Tape Tools (L&TT). Library firmware versions Product 1/8 G2 Autoloader MSL202 MSL4048 MSL8096 MSL8048 Release 2.80 4.70 7.00 9.50 9.50 NOTE: Twelve units for the launch of MSL8048 were built with 9.40 firmware. The 9.50 firmware is compatible with both the MSL8096 and MSL8048. Update recommendation Supersedes Recommended All earlier versions of library firmware. Product models All HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloaders, MSL2024, MSL4048, MSL8048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries. Languages • English (American) • English (International) HP StorageWorks MSL2024, MSL4048, MSL8048, and MSL8096 libraries, and 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader firmware versions 4.70, 7.00, 9.50, 9.50, and 2.80 3 Enhancements Added licensing feature The licensing feature added to the RMI Configuration page allows the upgrade of the new HP MSL8048 product (48 storage slot version of MSL8096 product) to add 48 additional storage locations. This feature allows the upgrade from MSL8048 to MSL8096. NOTE: This applies only to the MSL8048 Added setting to remote management interface (RMI) A configuration setting on the RMI has been provided to select displaying the RMI content in either English or Japanese languages. Improved encryption key backup The Backup feature for Encryption Keys located in the Security section of the RMI has been enhanced to allow selection of the token’s most recently added keys to be stored in the backup file. Previous versions only allow storing of all keys on the encryption token to the backup file. Added encryption token firmware display The RMI Status Security screen now reports encryption token firmware version number. Fixes Library parameters (link Serial Number, and WWID) are lost during power cycle testing Corrected problem by modifying the algorithm used while writing this data into memory during the power on sequence. When Extended Mode was enabled in a library and the library is power cycled without installing a Library extender, then an error condition "Unsupported Drives” is incorrectly returned After clicking OK, the library continues to operate as a separate library as expected. However, the library would display the OCP warning Unsupported Drives. Corrected this false warning report by properly initializing each library’s drives after encountering the Extender Missing 8B 40 error condition. 4 NOTE: This does not apply to 1/8 G2 Autoloader. RMI not responding in case "Dump Log" or "Save Service Dump" button was selected several times RMI was not responding in case the Dump Log or Save Service Dump button on the RMI - Support Library logs page was selected several times. This problem has been corrected by modifying these RMI buttons to only be selected one time for each case. Library may become non-responsive when RMI obtains a large library or autoloader support ticket Library may become non-responsive (‘hang’) when using the RMI to obtain a large library or autoloader support ticket. This issue has now been corrected by allocating additional memory during the process. The RMI firmware updates from file fail when drive has tape loaded Previously, the RMI firmware updates from file fail when the drive has a tape loaded. When this occurred the RMI displayed an "error during firmware upgrade: IR invalid personality" message. To avoid the issue, this firmware version does not allow the RMI to download firmware to a drive which has a tape loaded. Upper right 12 slot shows as disabled if all mailslots are enabled and lower left mailslot is opened If all mailslots are enabled (15) and the lower left mailslot is opened, the RMI Operations-> Move Media display indicates that the upper right 12 slot mailslot is disabled. This is corrected and moves to or from the 12 position mailslot are now allowed. NOTE: This applies to MSL8096, and to firmware release 9.30 only. Library reports Not ready to ready transition after unload command In random mode, the library reports a Unit Attention Not ready to ready transition after unload command is received by the drive. This version will not send a Unit Attention in this case. Unable to retrieve drive support tickets Previously, when operating in the Extended mode, it was not possible to retrieve drive support tickets from the drives which are in the lower library. This problem is now corrected. HP StorageWorks MSL2024, MSL4048, MSL8048, and MSL8096 libraries, and 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader firmware versions 4.70, 7.00, 9.50, 9.50, and 2.80 5 NOTE: Does not apply to 1/8 G2 Autoloader Robotics firmware changes Compatible robotics Firmware Version: 2.80e 2.10e applies to MSL8096, MSL8048, MSL4048, MSL2024 1/8 G2 Autoloader Modified robotics algorithms to avoid errors which are reported in the logs as retries. The error code reported was 8B 33: Elevator blocked. The reporting of this type of false error is corrected by this robotics firmware version. Compatibility When using firmware version 2.50 (1/8 G2), 4.40 (MSL2024), 6.70 (MSL4048), 9.10 (MSL8096) or newer revisions with the Encryption Kit, any key server tokens set with an odd number of characters for the PIN will not be totally backwards compatible in Autoloaders or Libraries with code revisions 2.10, 4.00, 6.30, or 8.70. In those cases, a token in an Autoloader or Library with 2.10, 4.00, 6.30, or 8.70 firmware revisions will be able to accept the PIN for the token and access keys on the token, but the user will not be able to change the PIN on the token, save the keys to a file, or restore the keys from a file until the Autoloader or Library firmware is upgraded. Users should always upgrade to the latest version of firmware to ensure complete compatibility. Installation instructions To upgrade firmware from the RMI: 1. 2. 3. 4.
